Kicking off a new Mindful MoF Cookery Course in Gateshead for 2025

For 2025 we are launching a brand new iteration of the Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food course that aims to support young people who are facing challenges with their mental health including low mood that can be caetgorised as depression.

Funded by Gateshead Council, we're collaborating with the Jamie Oliver Company, the William Templeton Young People's Mental Health Foundation and evaluators at University of Reading to put research into practice when it comes to how food impacts our mental health and wellbeing.

This pilot programme, for young people aged 16-25, will see 8 weeks of cookery classes combined with basic nutrition principles enable and empower young people to take control of their diet and food behaviours in a way that postively impacts their mental health.

There is loads of research out there that indicates a adopting a primarily Mediterranean style diet, which is based on plenty of plant-based foods, variety and wholefoods, improves our brain chemistry. This is all about eating the things that give us good gut health allowing our gut and brain to connect in ways that promotes good mood - balancing out all those hormones responsible for how we feel and our resilience to the tests and challenges that life can throw our way.

At a time when too many young people are experience poor mental health and a lack of food education in core curriculums we are ready to do what we can to ensure young people have the tools and confidence to make good food choices now and long into the future.

The 8 week cookery courses will kick off in or around March 2025 and we currently looking to team up with any community services, places and spaces who are able to support the project in raising awareness of the course locally, are keen to refer young people to the course, can offer community venues where cookery classes can take place or who are just keen to link up and find out more.

Exciting times!
